VluchtBus is back in Greece !
At the moment VluchtBus is in Idomeni ( the Greek Macedonian border) and has joined some autonomous collectives that are active there. One of these collectives is the Aid Delivery Mission, a group that provides 9000 meals a day, tea, clothes and tent distribution. Also there are people that go around the camp and collect testimonies from refugees.
The situation in Idomeni gets worse by the day. With around 14.000 people in the camp now and more people arriving everyday, aid is running out fast. Macedonia was only allowing 100 to 200 Syrian people to cross the border each day, but now shut the border completely. With more people arriving every day, the group stuck at the border is steadily growing. In the region of Tessaloniki there are more or less 50.000 refugees, so all the camps are full. While volunteers spend all their time trying to deal with the mass of people stuck at the borders we see once again that there is little to no help from NGO's or officials.
Besides the camp in Idomeni there is a group of around 600 that sleep at a gas station in a neighboring village, waiting to be able to go to Idomeni and hoping to one day cross the border.
In the days that we have been here we have seen so much desperation. A young boy that tried to cross the border on top of a train was electrocuted just the other day. He is either dead or severely injured. He is just 1 of thousands of victims at the hand of fortress Europe. The same night there where rumours of a baby dying from the cold, which led to new protests where people blocked the train tracks. Situation is quite tense, more and more buses of riot cops arriving. On top of that, in the beginning of the week there was a huge storm that flooded the camp.
