New York Times: Iranian Commander Dismisses Saudi Role in Syria

TEHRAN — A top Iranian commander reacted with ridicule to Saudi Arabia’s suggestion that it was prepared to take part in ground operations in Syria, saying Saturday that the kingdom would not dare send troops there.

Maj. Gen. Mohammad Ali Jafari, the head of Iran’s powerful Revolutionary Guards Corps, said Saudi forces were not capable of operating in an environment as complex as Syria, where a multifaceted civil war has been raging for nearly five years.

Saudi Arabia backs some of the rebel factions there, while Iran supports the government of President Bashar al-Assad and has been sending military advisers for years. More than 400 Iranians have been killed in the conflict.
