The concept of aquatic biota as a labile and vulnerable component of the water self-purification system.

Novelty: The paper presents some new ideas and new facts.
** NEW IDEAS: A new fundamental conceptualization of the role of biota in the functioning of aquatic ecosystems is proposed. According to the new conceptualization that was suggested by the author, the complex of aquatic organisms (aquatic biota) is a central, labile and potentially vulnerable component of the water self-purification system in aquatic ecosystems. This fundamental concept leads to substantial changes in the hierarchy of priorities for protection of biodiversity and environment. According to the concept suggested in this work, the maximum allowable concentrations (MACs) for specific substances should be established after taking into account the possible effects of pollutants on the water self-purification system. Possible effects on many organisms, including filter feeders, should be taken into consideration. Both inhibiting and stimulating effects of sublethal concentrations of pollutants are dangerous, because either of them may cause an imbalance in the complicated system of water self-purification. The fundamental concept suggested in this work heightens the level of priority of the sublethal effects of pollutants. The sublethal effects leading to changes in the functional activity of populations of aquatic organisms may cause an imbalance in the system of water self-purification.
NEW FACTS: new data on toxic effects of organic chemicals (detergents) on functional activity of bivalve mollusks, namely on their filtration activity.

NOVELTY: It is the first paper that reported two new experimental results with the great pond snail [Lymnaea stagnalis].

First, the new author’s experiments measured the mollusk-driven fluxes of the matter and chemical elements in a model ecosystem.

Second, the authors got another innovative result: a discovery of new toxic effects of chemical pollutants.
Namely, these biologically driven flows of the chemical elements were decreased by a chemical pollutant exemplified by a synthetic surfactant ( Surface-Active Agent , Quaternary Ammonium Compound).
The fluxes of these chemical elements were studied:
carbon (C), nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and silicon (Si).

EXPLANATION of and comment on TERMINOLOGY:
cationic amphiphilic compound = cationic surfactant,  Surface-Active Agent, in this paper it is the cationic surfactant tetradecyltrimethylammonium bromide (TDTMA); a new toxic effect of this chemical was discovered: inhibition of water filtration by zooplankton, namely, by rotifers. This chemical exemplifies a new type of hazardous contaminants (pollutants) of water.

Rotifers: Rotifers are an important part of the freshwater zooplankton, being a major foodsource and with many species also contributing to the decomposition of soil organic matter. Most rotifers are around 0.1–0.5 mm long, and are common in freshwater environments throughout the world. The word "rotifer" is derived from a Latin word meaning "wheel-bearer", due to the corona around the mouth that in concerted sequential motion resembles a wheel (though the organ does not actually rotate). The coronal cilia create a current that sweeps food into the mouth. Rotifers eat particulate organic detritus, dead bacteria, algae, and protozoans. They eat particles up to 10 micrometres in size. Like crustaceans, rotifers contribute to nutrient recycling. For this reason, they are used in fish tanks to help clean the water, to prevent clouds of waste matter.

EXPLANATION of the terminology: pellets are the particles of undigested matter (mainly biomass of undigested food) that the mollusks (the great pond snails and freshwater mussels) excrete so that these mollusks function as engines that drive the transfer of a significant amount of organic matter.

NOVELTY:
First measurements of concentrations of some chemical elements (C, N, P, Si, and Al) in the pellets of aquatic mollusks. The first measurements of the biogeochemical fluxes of those elements with the pellets. A discovery of a new type of geochemical fluxes of chemical elements in the biosphere: the vertical (downward) flux of the elements toward the bottom of freshwater ecosystems, via pellets of bivalves (freshwater mussels,
Unio sp. and other species).
