"NO TO RACISM! SEEKING ASYLUM IS A HUMAN RIGHT!
SOLIDARITY WITH THE REFUGEES, 23-24 JANUARY
The war in Syria has caused 8 million people to be displaced and 4 million people to seek asylum in other countries. There are 2.2 millian Syrian refugees in Turkey, making this country host to the largest number of refugees. Thousands of refugees have died in the Aegean while trying to leave Turkey and reach Europe.
Many European countries have closed their doors to refugees. The Turkish government has reached agreement with the European Union to prevent refugees from crossing from Turkey into Europe, in return for a bribe of 3 billion euro. This was followed by thousands of Syrians being taken from the Aegean coast and placed into camps.
The AKP government has given the refugees a stark choice: stay in these camps or get sent back to Syria.
This is not acceptable!
We must force the Greek and Turkish governments to open the borders to Syrian refugees.
No to racism! Seeking asylum is a human right. These people are trying to escape from a war zone, and they must be treated in accordance with human rights. We demand that the Turkish government stops treating refugees as "guests" without any social rights and that all asylum seekers are given full refugee rights.
At the same time as the anti-racist demonstrations to be held in Greece on 23-24 January, we shall also be organising a series of events in solidarity with Syrian refugees.
