Beautiful, lively, 2000 strong demonstration by refugees and supporters in Calais, followed by a brilliant action: a self-organized occupation of the ferry port by refugees from 'the jungle'. Some 500 entered the port baffling the police: riot police had very strong presence in town, and along the route of the march, they only forgot to protect the port, how silly of them! 50 protesters managed to board the Spirit of Britain, very symbolic name, but were later taken off the ship and evicted from the port. Some 100 people were arrested, most released, though a few may be still missing and in deportation centre. 8 people were taken to court, of which 6 migrants charged with breach of the transport code by entering a ferry without permission, and two French supporters charged with the same breach of transport code and facilitation of entry, that is a far more serious offence. The case has been adjourned to the 22nd February, please support!
The French activists are out on bail, forbidden from staying in the Calais area. The refugees (four from Afghanistan, one from Syria and one from Sudan) are held in Longuenesse prison. We have their names and can send them messages of support, and, more important still, help them find good legal representation.
Three Italian activists were ordered to leave the French territory, under the state of emergency.
The right wing press and local authorities are going mad at the noborders, as usual they cannot conceive that migrants are well capable to organize actions by themselves, and they are accusing European Anarchists of instigating them.
