The past twenty-four hours have been a tense time in the Jungle – the refugee camp outside
Calais. The state authorities have been wanting to bring in housing containers that would
shelter 12 people each, however there is only enough containers to provide shelter for
1,500 when the camp currently contains 5-6000 people. ---- The camp also contains stable
communities and support networks. From out of nothing there are shops and cafes made out
of wood, pallets and tarps. A library, school, churches and mosques have all been built to
provide small comfort in amongst the squalid conditions. The various communities involved
have established centres to help new arrivals and support those who have been staying for
some time. ---- The conditions in the camp are dire, with everyone wanting a safe and dry
place to live. However the containers are being forced on the camp at the cost of
bulldozing the existing infrastructure and leaving most people out to die. Along with this
any new camp would be surrounded by prison-fencing and those inside subject to a harsh
registration regime. Make no mistake, this is the creation of a new concentration camp in
the heart of Northern Europe.
It comes at no surprise that the residents of the Jungle have opted to resist these
changes. Evictions have started, tear gas is being used on the residents, and a call out
for on-the-ground solidarity has been made. If you can get over then now is the time to do so.

Yusef Asad was unjustly sentenced to two and a half years in Prison for defending himself
from racists attacking a Palestine March in Cardiff in July 2014. He received the heaviest

If it is no longer representative, the small South Rural union is dynamic, constructive
and does not hesitate to take a position on the ecological question in an anti-capitalist
vein. Presentation at the end of its congress. ---- The South Rural Congress was held in
Saint-Ours-les-Roches from 2 to 5 November. Rural South unionized agents of the Ministry
of Agriculture and part of the Ministry of Environment officials: one finds personal
public agricultural education, higher education, decentralized services (slaughterhouses,
sanitary controls, veterinary services) and central government... In short, a vast field
where unionization because of permanent and destructive reforms of public services, it
involved agents lose themselves! ---- Rural South is about 200 members and 5% in
professional elections, which earned the union to lose its national representativeness
like South education. The conference was therefore placed under the sign of the
reconquest! With four texts under ten pages each congress, written in understandable
language, rural South has managed to avoid the trap of a sterile congress or we forget the
basics: talk about trade unionism. Claims are simple and unitary. The union managed to
have a debate on secularism without drama!
Beyond the defense of public service, the Southern Rural particularity is to be located in
the area of agriculture and the environment. The text on ecology was placed in terms of
social ecology by saying that the solution to the ecological question was to break with
capitalism! By connecting in a Congress resolution, labor practices and environmental,
South Rural opens a perspective in which the whole labor movement must seize. The
environmental issue must be thinking at the heart of trade union struggles. Indeed, we
must not let this debate be the domain of experts and "citizens". This is a radical change
in production that we can find solutions to the ecological crisis and until proven guilty
employees are best placed to address and act!
More horizontality and direct democracy
The conference was also an opportunity to discuss with other components of Solidarity, a
labor inspector South Labour gave an update on attacks against labor law especially
related to Macron law. The union also affirmed its solidarity with the labor inspector
questioned by Justice merely for doing his vis-à-vis the work of the Tefal company.
The end of the conference was dedicated to the functioning of the union where the tracks
are numerous improvements including the introduction of more direct democracy and
horizontality. The new national union office will have a heavy task of animation in a
context of massive reduction in operating resources (reduction of trade shocks and reduced
financial means). The reasons for fighting are not lacking, for us to be effective,
unitary and combative!
