The most important task this winter is to analyze the weather in the Southern Ocean. The routes are Falklands to Uschuaia, Uschuaia to Antarctica, Antarctica back to the Falklands, Falklands to South Georgia and South Georgia to Cape Town. From earlier analysis we know that the most difficult routes are to and from South Georgia. These routes are also new to us.
Earlier analysis from 2012-2014 shows that the probability of finding a departure day that meets our weather criterias is only 10% to and from South Georgia. To and from Antarctica the probability is 50%. The South Georgia routes are much more difficult than the routes to and from Antarctica which is a surprise to many people. On top of that the route from South Georgia to Cape Town is long - almost 3000 nm or two weeks of sailing. We will start our weather analysis on December 15 and continue to February 15 2017.
