Wall Street Journal: Syrian Government Forces, Allies Boast of Breaking Aleppo Air Base Siege

Russian-backed operation broke long-running siege imposed by Islamic State on the Kweires air base

BEIRUT—The Syrian regime and its allies celebrated Wednesday a Russian-backed operation that broke a long-running siege imposed by Islamic State militants on an air base near the northern Syrian city of Aleppo.

After weeks of fighting with support from Russian warplanes, pro regime forces including fighters and commanders from Iran and Iran-backed groups like the Lebanese militia Hezbollah and Iraqi militias were able on Tuesday to enter the Kweires air base, east of Aleppo.
