In the borough of Queens, we saw the vibrancy of the maker movement up close. At the Maker Education Forum, I talked with dozens of inventors, entrepreneurs, funders, thought leaders, teachers, and makers who gathered together to showcase their work. There is nothing quite like hearing about the culture of invention and invigoration that mobile maker labs can spark in schools, libraries, and even in children’s hospitals. It’s incredible to hear what 3D printers can do for amputees looking for enhanced prosthetics — or to witness a middle-school girl as the realization strikes her that she too can build many of the products that infuse the world around her.
