Another Big Fire Last Night

At least 50 shelters destroyed in a part of the ‘jungle’ where mainly Eritrean people were living. Three people are in the hospital, two with burns and the third, a pregnant woman, suffering from shock and smoke inhalation. The fire started after midnight in the camp near the church, on the other side of the road and quickly spread. The people managed to put out most of the fire, which destroyed a large area of the camp, before the fire brigade arrived. The ambulance would not come into the camp and the injured people had to be carried out by their friends. The police were surrounding the camp and eventually some CRS came to the area of the fire in riot gear, with gas and two big dogs. The prefect has just told the associations that they are not going to provide fire extinguishers because ‘in the current situation they could be used as weapons’.
As usual people have lost everything: shelter, personal belongings, papers and documents, clothes and shoes.
