-- The ecological emergency: out of capitalism (fr, it, pt)
[machine translation] (a-infos-en@ainfos.ca)

In December 2015 held in Paris on 21st summit of Heads of State on climate change (Cop 21)
supposed to take measures to stem the risk. ---- What to expect? Alas nothing. This high
mass will be a smoke screen. Policy makers (States) and economic (multinational) can not
want both: the infinite growth increasingly producing, increasing selling, leveraging, by
offshoring, enriching increasingly a minority of owners; a necessary decrease by the
relocation of production, waste reduction, energy sobriety, meeting the needs of the
majority by the egalitarian distribution of wealth. ---- Insurmountable contradiction.
---- It is through the mobilization of those who really have an interest therein - the
working people of every condition, manual and intellectual, urban and rural, North and
South ... - that we can change society, regain control the economy, and therefore the future.

200 MILLION
That's the likely number of climate réfugié.es in 2050, due to drought and rising sea levels.

At 37% 15
This is the proportion of known animal species that could disappear by 2050 because of
climate change. This great extinction already threatens human food resources:
disappearance of pollinating bees, collapse of fish stocks, etc.

4 TO 6
This is in degrees centigrade, the increase in average land temperatures by 2100 if we
follow the current trend of emissions of greenhouse gases (GHG). The disruption of the
natural balance, agricultural, weather, etc., result in a disruption of living conditions
of humanity on the planet.

2 BILLION
The number of people on the planet who have access to limited water and poor quality. They
will be 3 billion in 2030 according to the UN.

1.3 BILLION
tons of food are wasted every year in the world: one third of total production!

50%
appliances that fail in France are thrown instead of being repaired.

3
Earths, that's what it would take to support humanity if each and every one of its
inhabitants that consumed as much French. If each and everyone consumed as much a United
unien would require six planets Earth. At present, human consumption already exceeds the
biosphere renewal capacity.

SYSTEM IN FULL FLIGHT INTO FRONT

The developed world is so dependent capitalist structures and actors (from our jobs to our
diet) we can not imagine or even make them disappear resist their logic. However,
resistances and alternatives show that another world is possible and that a radical change
is needed to achieve equality between human beings and respect for nature.

A deadly agricultural model

The capitalist and globalized model of agriculture can not feed the whole of humanity, so
that it emits 24% of global emissions of greenhouse gases. His logic is:

the creation of huge areas of land grabbing, depriving small farmers livelihood;
intensive exploitation, with the stroke of chemical fertilizer, patented seeds (that is to
say, prohibited use of small farmers without paying duties), pesticides (the main cause of
the disappearance of bees, does seem -it), transgenic plants (with consequences on the
ecosystem deliberately ignored);
the progression of a meat food model, while the intensive meat production has a very
negative impact. The ecological footprint of the production of beef, for example, is 30
times that of the production of vegetables!
Against this logic, the struggles are multiplying in the world: movements of landless
peasants, deprived of livelihood by large owners, defense of peasant and local
agriculture, "defending zones" and struggles against hoarding or destruction of land and
species (patents on life, GMOs, land use ...).

The overexploitation of the planet's resources

Having virtually exhausted fossil fuels and minerals more accessible, capitalism turns to
more expensive methods of resources, energy and human lives. Ecological issues finally
join the social issues of equal access to resources and preservation of living
environments throughout the world:

extraction of fossil resources "unconventional" (oil sands, shale gas and oil) is
catastrophic for the environment (deforestation, massive pollution of water, air and soil);
the monstrous mines open multiply and leave behind huge disaster areas;
more and more arable land used for agrofuel production for rolling cars, or biomass to
generate electricity, instead of feeding the world;
Competition for the extraction of metals, oil, rare earths, uranium, etc. causes of wars,
massacres and displacement.
Nuclear energy: in any case an alternative

The anti-nuclear struggle is fundamental to radical ecology. Far from being a "clean
energy" and "effective" to replace hydrocarbons, nuclear power is extremely expensive,
emitter of greenhouse gases and consumer of resources, including uranium, a raw material
becoming exhausted . Not to mention nuclear waste for which there is no satisfactory
solution, or risk of catastrophe like Chernobyl and Fukushima that constantly hangs over
our heads.

Capitalism can not be ecological

The basis of the capitalist system is growing, as we repeat all the time.

To sell more, companies reduce the lifetime of products, making them very complicated or
impossible to repair, using fragile and perishable components. The hype incentive to buy
new products supposedly more beautiful, more modern, more useful, believing that happiness
and social prestige are measured by the amount of material goods we possess. The standard
is that each individual owns his car, a washing machine, the lawnmower, tools, etc., even
if some of the objects we have only used a few times a year!

To reduce production costs, companies choose the cheapest solutions, even if they are
disastrous for the environment: in the choice of raw materials, production processes,
energy sources, waste management, never mind the environmental or health consequences,
priority is profit.

Invent something else

Facing this destructive logic, it is necessary to multiply the environmental struggles,
social, trade union, to minimize capitalist expansion.

Politicians parties (PS, UMP, FN ...) have, in economic, a fixed idea, a word to mouth:
the sacrosanct (and found) "growth" to reduce unemployment . This is exactly the opposite
is needed: in the public interest, we must begin a reorganization of production-oriented
decay and to meet the needs rather than reap the profits. And in the same vein, a
re-distribution of work and wealth: stop the opulence for a privileged minority, the
widespread waste, large unnecessary projects; more public services, employment for all.

Production methods and alternative consumption, individual or group are beneficial but are
not sufficient in themselves to bring down capitalism, which may very well tolerated while
exploiting the rest of the population and the planet .

It is necessary to articulate the environmental struggles and alternative experiences to a
global anti-capitalist project to reconstruct society on new bases.

To control the economy, production, development
ONE SOLUTION: SOCIALIZATION

The awareness of the danger that threatens the planet encourages more and more people to
seek individually to change the way they consume. This is beneficial, but we must not
delude ourselves: it is a large-scale change is necessary. Capitalism has embarked on a
headlong rush uncontrollably. Nothing lasting is possible under this system.

The alternative is a self-management system, which only allow a collective control of the
future.

1. To produce and consume differently

In a world of limited resources, we need to think about what to produce and how, for
reasons of economy, ecosystem restoration, abolition of inequality and meeting the needs
of all. This will be possible only:

collective ownership of means of production: land, resources, machines, factories,
knowledge, technology, energy
the relocation of production, decided and controlled by producers and consumers.
designing durable, repairable and recyclable.
the use of renewable and local resources whenever possible.
the collective use of the most expensive items to be produced (large appliances,
electronics ...) between neighbors and neighbors, friends or consumer groups and consumers.
2. Sanitize agriculture

(24% of greenhouse gas emissions worldwide) Peasant agriculture, agro-ecology,
permaculture, etc. show that another agriculture is possible, respecting nature and our
health. It requires:

human-sized farms, managed collectively as possible, with a diversified and integrated
production.
the removal of synthetic inputs (pesticides, fertilizers), to revitalize soils by relying
on biological balance.
the development of urban agriculture
Distribution short circuits.
free seeds and free movement.
3. Streamline transport

(14% of greenhouse gas emissions in the world)

reduce the international transport of goods.
closer workplaces and living
prioritize public transport, the circulation means "sweet" (cycling, walking), sharing
vehicles within consumer groups.
produce sustainable vehicles, repairable and energy efficient (simpler, slower).
4. Reconfigure the industry

(21% of greenhouse gas emissions in the world)

relocation of production relocated to allow the productive autonomy of each region of the
planet
industry association and crafts for a comprehensive and collective management of product
life cycle: design, production, repair, recycling, waste.
removal of harmful or unequal productions: luxury, armament, agricultural products overview
5. Saving energy

(19% of greenhouse gas emissions in the world)

drastic reduction in energy consumption: thermal insulation of existing homes, voluntary
simplicity, improved energy efficiency (electronics, housing, etc.) in an overall decrease
of logic (produce and consume less)
out of nuclear power, which threatens the planet from irreversible disaster.
gradual withdrawal of fossil fuels, the remaining 80% must remain underground if we want
to limit global warming.
renewable energy development with decentralized production, according to the resources
controlled locally, as part of a global network ensuring equal access to all and to all.

"ALL AND ALL RESPONSIBLE"? YES AND NO!!

It blames the people with the idea that humanity as a whole is responsible for the
ecological crisis.

In fact, the popular classes of the North and South (especially those in the South!) Do
not have the same responsibility as the propertied classes and key decision makers.

Recall that, in capitalism, the economic system is placed "off democracy." The major
technological choices, development, investment, etc. are a function of the financial
interests of a privileged minority.

They escape all collective control.

The working people, North and South, have a responsibility, therefore, only one: to
mobilize to impose their will on this privileged minority.

This is the only way to change the system, and build a new world.
