The main ingredients of the remedy? Onion, garlic and wine. "We were blown away by just how effective the combination of ingredients was," said Dr Freya Harrison of the University of Nottingham's faculty of medicine and health sciences.
The scientific trial is a timely reminder that traditional medicine should not be treated dismissively. In a recent interview President Ameenah Gurib-Fakim of Mauritius stated that "traditional healers and medicines have been overlooked for too long, and scientists and governments alike should now dig deeper into this rich repository of knowledge....to find and develop medicines".
