Veterinary Highlights: 3-D Intestine Replacement Therapy?

Stem cell treatments are being evaluated for treatment of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). We were considering doing this for Jasmine.

Scientists from the Johns Hopkins Children's Center and the University of Pittsburgh are taking this a step further by growing a healthy intesting atop a 3-D scaffold made of a substance used in surgical sutures.

They report that this treatment successfully regenerated gut tissue in the colons of dogs with missing gut lining.

The guts of the dogs with implanted intestines healed completely within eight weeks.

Adding probiotic bacteria to the newly created tissue further assists the growth and differentiation of the gut cells.

All this is quite exciting research.

I hope that regenerative therapies will keep making their way into both veterinary and human medicine.
