Actor to human rights champion: Join me
Dear friends,
As an actor, I've played flawed and fraught individuals struggling with power.
It's an all-too-common theme in real life as well.
That's why I support Amnesty International. They are helping humanity get things right. They stand up to dictators. They speak out for people at risk. They send investigators into war zones to report on crimes against humanity.
If you want to get things right, join me. Make a donation as part of Amnesty's September Membership Drive. Your donation will be matched dollar for dollar by a group of generous donors until September 30.
The theme of this year's drive is "My Moment. Our Movement." We're asking supporters like you to remember the moment you first knew you had to stand up for what was right.
My moment happened as a child. I saw a personal injustice and knew I needed to stand up for those whose rights are violated. It became a lifelong mission of mine. And that's why I came to Amnesty.
Right now, Amnesty is helping oppressed people get the help and justice they deserve. For example, in China, they are working to free activist Liu Ping.
Liu Ping is a former Chinese factory worker who decided to speak out against corruption through peaceful activism. Now she's a target of the Chinese government.
In 2014, she was sentenced to six and half years for "provoking quarrels and stirring up trouble" as well as "using an evil cult to undermine law enforcement." Amnesty has declared Liu Ping a Prisoner of Conscience, a person jailed solely for the peaceful expression of her beliefs and we are pressing the Chinese government to release her by mobilizing our global movement of more than 7-million people to speak out on her behalf.
We all have a moment that drove us to champion human rights. Amnesty is our movement. Will you answer the call? Sincerely, Patrick Stewart |
