Direct Democracy and/or Anarchism
21 Uhr (20 Uhr Küfa) - F54 (Friedelstraße 54, U Hermannplatz) in the rooms of the Acacia
Berlin e.V. ---- For decades, anarchists have spread direct democracy as one of the key
elements to radicalize social movements and keep them at odds with representative
democracy, hierarchical structures, and reformist politics. Today, every uprising, from
Occupy to anti-austerity struggles, calls for "real democracy." At the same time, we are
seeing a trend of states experimenting with directly democratic mechanisms such as
e-democracy, participatory budgets, and referendums. ---- In the 20th century, workers'
rights were the answer to labor struggles; in the 1980s and 1990s, the response of the
state to growing unrest in the Eastern Bloc was to pump money into the NGO sector. After
the uprisings of the past seven years, what if the state were to placate us by offering
concessions on the field of direct democracy? We already see the emergence of parties such
as Syriza out of supposedly directly democratic social movements. What does that tell us
about explicitly anarchist tactics such as assemblies? Can they be coopted to reinforce
state power? If so, is the problem the assembly itself, or the way we approach it?
Join us for a discussion about the potential and the limitations of direct democracy,
based on experiences in a variety of struggles in the Balkans and beyond, with a
contributor from Slovenia to the recent CrimethInc. outreach and dialogue project, To
Change Everything.
