Dear friends,
“Marriage is a man and a woman living together”.
That statement came fromGerman Chancellor Angela Merkel when asked about marriage equality recently. Merkel is making her views clear: gay and lesbian couples are second-class.
But 73% of Germans are in favour of marriage equality. Merkel's allies like France and the UK have already passed it. The only way we can lose is by staying silent. Love always wins when there’s an avalanche of public pressure.
We need to build the biggest petition in Germany's history to stand up for love. With so much support for equality from Germans and people all over the world, Merkel would have to listen – otherwise her political credibility could be at risk.
Merkel's anti-gay comments came when she was asked about marriage equality by a famous German Youtube star. She acted like she was against discrimination, but with this statement she made her views clear: loving gay and lesbian couples are second-class citizens in Germany.
Merkel and her Christian Democratic party have been fighting equality for years. They’ve voted down every attempt to pass same-sex marriage, and just last month, party members sent an open letter saying marriage equality would be the end of marriage as an institution.
But public pressure for equality is building at a huge scale. The majority of Germans support full marriage equality. Meanwhile, major world powers like the US and the UK and almost all of Western Europe have passed equality.
If thousands of us join together, we could create the biggest petition Merkel has ever received on this issue. We can make Merkel realize her whole country is in favor of equality – it could be enough to make her change her mind. Sign and share now to tell Angela it’s time: go.allout.org/en/a/merkel-marriage We’ve been working for marriage equality in Europe for years. When Germany’s neighbour France was debating the issue, All Out stepped in for equality. Over 200,000 of us signed a giant petition and dozens of us attended protests across France. We joined an incredible outcry of local activists, and thanks to this work, marriage equality passed in France in 2013.
Thanks for going All Out,
Andre, Jessica, Oscar and the rest of the All Out team.
