The anti-gay Alliance Defending Freedom is hosting a giant training in California.They want to train hundreds of lawyers to push for hateful laws globally. Already this group is promoting anti-gay laws in the US, India, Jamaica, and Belize.
Here is how we can stop them: the organisers are hiding the exact venue, but All Out’s staff team have narrowed it down to two Marriott hotels in Orange County, California.
Massive public pressure on Marriott could push them to admit publicly that they're hosting the training. Marriott pride themselves on being pro-equality, so once the secret's out, they'll have to condemn the Alliance Defending Freedom's anti-gay values. It'll make it much harder for the training to go ahead.
The Alliance Defending Freedom has been behind some of the most hateful anti-gay laws in the US. Their legal team advised Indiana lawmakers on that state’s anti-gay Religious Freedom Law. They tried to stop marriage equality in California and defended same-sex marriage bans in over 25 states.
They’ve also been working to take this hate global. Since 2012, they’ve fought tooth and nail to keep anti-gay laws on the books in Jamaica. They’ve even attacked women’s rights at the European court of human rights and lobbied at the UN.
But the problem is, no one really knows about the scary work this group does. Getting a huge company like Marriott to condemn them will bring a lot of public attention they don't want. It would expose the ADF's anti-gay agenda, which could be enough to get the training cancelled. Will you call on Marriott to admit that they're hosting the training? Marriott prides itself on being pro-equality: their President and CEO wrote last year that “business can't afford inequality.”
If we create a huge outcry around this conference, it'll show Marriott that condemning the anti-gay values of the ADF is the only way to protect their pro-equality reputation. The ADF will hear a powerful message: their anti-gay hate isn’t welcome, not in California, not anywhere. It could be enough to stop the training.
In May 2014, we heard that scary anti-gay minister Lou Engle was planning on attending a conference in Geneva, Switzerland. Engle has spread hate all over the world – even supporting Uganda’s ‘Kill the Gays’ bill. But after 70,000 of us spoke out, Engle was dropped from the conference all together. Now, a scary anti-gay conference is about to happen – in California!
