LETTER OF THE DEMANDS OF THE SYRIAN COMMUNITY IN CALAIS
This is a letter of demands of the Syrian community currently stuck in Calais. This letter is written independantly of any charity or political party. It comes from an independant group of people fleeing war and seeking for asylum.
Here is our message :

There is an average of 75 syrian citizens staying in Calais. They are living on 3 differents areas : the jungle, the parvis and the gate. None of them is currently asking for asylum in France.

We consider that the path to reach England is extremely dangerous. We are aware of the risks that we take and we suffer the consequences. For instance, Mouaz was a young Syrian who drowned on the English Channel. Shadi lost the use of his two arms after a truck crash. We also have already been threatened by a truck driver who was holding us at gunpoint. We are very frequentely beaten and gassed by French policemen. It is really easy to find videos showing such facts on the Internet.

We consider that the path to reach England is extremely dangerous. We are aware of the risks that we take and we suffer the consequences. Firstly, because we speak English. The language is definitly the most important factor when it comes to start a new life abroad.
Also, we all have relatives and kinfolk in England.
In the end, we think the welcoming conditions are far better than in France. Indeed, the country of Human Right offers asylum but keep us living outside for months and months while England accomodates, respects the dignity and the physhical integrity of its asylum seekers.

We claim for the right to dignity. We are not animals but human beings, and we demand to be considered and treated as such.
So, we wish to communicate with both English and French governements in order to find reasonnable and reliable solutions for us to reach England legally and safely.

RESPONSE FROM THE FRENCH AUTHORITIES TO THE SYRIAN CALAIS: GASSINGAND DISPOSAL BY POLICE
After their eviction by the gendarmes from Place d'Armes just before noon yesterday, the Calais Syrians have returned after 11 am this morning to voice their claims again.
Thirty exiles, some support, banners, a peaceful atmosphere.
The police made a first appearance an hour after the tone "you do not have the right to stay there, it is forbidden today, you must go." CRS buses parked just behind. Then they leave without intervening.
After 14h, the police returned seven cars of CRS, a car, the higher the BAC (Brigade anti-crime). The CRS are harnessed and helmeted, twice as many as the exiles and their supporters. After three summonses they repel protesters with increasing brutality and begin to gas at close range. One of the Syrians made a malaise - it's Ramadan, some of them do not eat and do not drink all day. The protesters are "escorted" to the bivouac in front of St. Peter and St. Paul's Church, a few hundred meters away.
In one form or another, the Syrians are determined to continue their movement. As one of them said: "we are here because of the agreement between Bashar Assad, Daech and Western governments, suffered by the Syrian people."
It was noted compared to the other two movements Calais Syrian exiles experienced in autumn 2013 and autumn 2014, a hardening of the repression, which is also found in other areas.
After the expulsion and gassing, one of the Syrians resume their motivations and requests (in English):

Se rendre en Angleterre, pour nous, est un acte dangereux ! Nous sommes non seulement conscients des risques mais nous subissons aussi ...

3. Pourquoi l'Angleterre ?
D'abord, parce que nous parlons anglais , et ce n'est pas à banaliser lorsqu'on souhaite débuter une nouvelle vie ailleurs...
Puis, parce qu'on a pour beaucoup des proches là bas !
Enfin, parce que les conditions d'accueil là bas sont beaucoup mieux gérées qu'ici! En effet, la France propose l'asile mais nous laisse dehors encore quelques mois alors qu'en Angleterre nous sommes hébergés sur le champs et dignement.

Nous réclamons le droit à la dignité!

Nous souhaitons donc communiquer avec les gouvernements franco-britanniques, dialoguer et trouver des solutions fiables afin de nous rendre en Angleterre légalement, en sécurité !

LA RÉPONSE DES AUTORITÉS FRANÇAISES AUX SYRIENS À CALAIS : GAZAGE ET ÉVACUATION PAR LA POLICE
Après leur évacuation par les gendarmes mobiles de la place d’Armes hier un peu avant midi, les Syriens à Calais y sont retournés ce matin après 11h pour faire entendre à nouveau leurs revendications.
Une trentaine d’exilés, quelques soutiens, des banderoles, une ambiance calme.
La police fait une première apparition une heure après, sur le ton « vous n’avez pas le droit de rester là, c’est interdit aujourd’hui, vous devez vous en aller ». Des cars de CRS se garent juste derrière. Puis ils partent sans intervenir.
Après 14h, retour de la police, sept cars de CRS, une voiture, plus la BAC (Brigade anti-criminalité). Les CRS sont casqués et harnachés, deux fois plus nombreux que les exilés et leurs soutiens. Après les trois sommations ils repoussent les manifestants avec une brutalité croissante, puis commencent à gazer à bout portant. Un des Syriens fait un malaise – c’est ramadan, certains d’entre eux ne mangent et ne boivent pas de toute la journée. Les manifestants sont « raccompagnés » jusqu’au bivouac devant l’église Saint-Pierre-et-Saint-Paul, à quelques centaines de mètres de là.
Sous une forme ou sous une autre, les Syriens sont déterminés à continuer leur mouvement. Comme dit l’un d’eux : « nous sommes là à cause de l’entente entre Bachar el-Assad, Daech et les gouvernements occidentaux, dont est victime le peuple syrien ».
On a pu constater par rapport aux deux autres mouvements d’exilés syriens que Calais a connu, à l’automne 2013 et à l’automne 2014, un durcissement de la répression, qu’on rencontre aussi dans d’autres domaines.
