10-year-old survives rape. She may not survive pregnancy.
Best friends, A 10-year-old girl in Paraguay who survived being raped by her stepfather continues to be denied a life-saving abortion despite doctors' warnings that her advancing pregnancy puts her life at risk. She is approximately 25 weeks pregnant. Pregnancy at such a young age is considered dangerous -- the World Health Organization warns that child pregnancies may lead to complications and even death. Speak up now to defend the life of this 10-year-old rape survivor. Urge authorities in Paraguay to grant her access to the safe abortion she needs. In Paraguay, abortion is legal only when the life of the woman or girl is at-risk. This young girl should therefore be entitled to an abortion under Paraguay's law. The decision to deny this young girl a safe abortion is a grave violation of her human rights to life and physical and mental health. The Committee on the Rights of the Child requires all State parties, including Paraguay, to ensure girls have access to abortion, at a minimum when their health and life is in danger and in cases of rape or incest. The clock is ticking. Will you help? Tell Paraguay to put all options, including abortion, on the table to protect this girl's life and prevent further torment. While Paraguayan authorities drag their feet, Amnesty International supporters like you have collected over 500,000 signatures insisting authorities protect the rights of this girl. The country's health minister stated he was hopeful for a "happy outcome" to her pregnancy. She needs more than hope. She needs immediate action. Show the world that girls' lives matter. Sign this Amnesty International petition without delay. Together, we make a difference. Thanks for defending human rights with Amnesty. In solidarity, Tarah Demant Senior Director, Identity and Discrimination Unit Amnesty International USA
