 | ISIS forced me to flee my home. Now I have nowhere to live and my life is in danger. Can you help give me a safe place to stay? | |
Dear Luc,
My name is Samir – I’m from Syria and I’m gay. Last year, ISIS invaded the city where I lived. I was terrified because I knew ISIS was attacking people like me. Just a few weeks later, ISIS murdered my best friend because they found out he was gay.
I was so scared, I decided to escape the country. I came to Lebanon, where I thought I would be safe. ISIS can’t reach me here, but with no money or family, I’m going to end up on the street where I could be attacked and abused.
An amazing organization called IRAP is trying to help me find a safe place. But right now they just don’t have the funds. So we’re asking All Out members for help. Can you chip in a few dollars to help me and other gay and trans refugees find a safe place to live?
Most refugee organizations don’t realize how much more dangerous it is to be gay or trans. While many refugees share housing costs with their relatives, some of us aren't so lucky. My family kicked me out for being gay, so that kind of option just doesn't exist.
On top of it all, there aren't any shelters in Lebanon that serve as safe spaces for trans men, trans women, or gay men like me. And that's why I met with IRAP (Iraqi Refugee Assistance Project) – they know how dangerous it is to be a gay or trans refugee.
$6,600 could get me off the streets for a year, while IRAP helps me get resettled permanently. Anything over that will allow us to help more people in Syria and other parts of the world who face deadly circumstances just because of who they are or who they love.
Can you help provide safe shelter for me and others in my situation?
In 2012, IRAP devised a brilliant strategy to bring lesbian and gay refugees from Iraq and Afghanistan to safety. But they didn't have the funds to make it happen. In just 72 hours, All Out members from around the world chipped in to help IRAP immediately move a dozen refugees to safety. With your help, we can do the same for people like me who have been forced to flee their homes in Syria.
Can you help me and other gay and trans refugees find a safe place to live?
Thanks for going All Out,
Samir, a Syrian refugee in Lebanon
P.S. Sleeping on the streets in Lebanon when you're gay or trans can be really dangerous – there's a huge risk of being beaten up or sexually assaulted. Will you chip in to help provide safe accommodations? go.allout.org/en/a/samir-lebanon
