Imbalance of factors which control the abundance of unicellular plankton under the anthropogenic impact

The factors which control the abundance of unicellular plankton in water include light, nutrients (P, N), temperature, viruses, exometabolites, grazing by consumers, and chemical contaminants. Chemicals can produce effects on the abundance of plankton cells in two ways: (1) direct effects on the plankton; (2) indirect effects via affecting consumers that graze and control the unicellular plankton. The author have shown that 7 detergents (1-50 mg/L) inhibited the rate of the removal of cells of unicellular plankton from the water column as a result of the water filtration by bivalve molluscs over 25 � 100 min. The bivalves were represented by freshwater (Unio tumidus) and marine (Mytilus galloprovincialis and Crassostrea gigas) organisms. The detergents inhibited water filtration by bivalves in a way similar to the action of individual surfactants which also inhibited the filtering activity by bivalves (Ostroumov, Doklady Akademii Nauk, 2000, 371: 844-846). Chemical mixtures (exemplified by detergents that contain both phosphates and surfactants) can pollute water and produce two types of effects on the unicellular plankton: (1) direct effects of stimulating unicellular plankton growth due to addition of phosphates; (2) indirect effect as a result of the surfactant-induced inhibition of grazing by bivalves. When summing up, the both effects can produce some imbalance in unicellular plankton populations towards increasing the amount of their cells per unit of volume of water.
