The Ekpe Esoteric Order and their Nsibidi Semiotics

From Oluwatoyin Vincent Adepoju:
Ekpe Esoteric Order Procession  in Arochukwu, South-Eastern Nigeria
The Ekpe esoteric order of South-Eastern Nigeria is famous for their Nsibidi semiotics, depicted in terms of inscriptional and performative forms.

The inscriptions are done on cloth and the human body.

The image above shows Nsibidi inscriptions on bodies of the members of the order and black and white Nsibidi designs on their wrappers .

The esoteric order members are in solemn procession, the structure of the procession, perhaps, and certainly the inscriptions on their bodies and clothes, bearing far reaching meaning at various levels of depth, the full range of meaning known only to the best informed among the members.
