After the excitement of trying out Lord Of Misrule Liquid Perfume, I was disheartened to find that the solid edition was not as impressive. While it was always going to be a tough product to compete against, let alone triumph over, I was convinced that there wouldn't be all that much difference between them. How wrong was I.

You only have to remove the lid of Lord Of Misrule Solid Perfume to discover that this fragrance smells rather different to it's liquid counterpart. Some might argue that this scent doesn't fair well in this format, but that's up to you as individuals to come to that conclusion on your own.

Made using the same combination of patchouli and black pepper oil, as well as vanilla absolute, the initial smell that you get in the tin is a rather waxy, patchouli aroma. Rather than the distinctive earthy smell I was expecting, the top note reminded me of when a solid perfume has aged, and it's scent is thwarted by the smells of the base oils coming through.

After another sniff, I could detect the pepper element, which is slightly more prominent here then it is in the liquid perfume. This is then intertwined with vanilla absolute - both ingredients working in the same way as the liquid perfume and creating a lovely sweet and spicy mix.

While I wasn't initially convinced by the perfume in the tin, I was hoping that it would 'come out of it's shell' on the skin, and reveal itself to be as rich and original as it's liquid sibling. What I found was that the perfume definitely smells better on the body - some of the waxy undertones disperse and the pepper and vanilla concoction shine through a little more.

To use solid perfumes, all you have to do is massage your finger over the surface of the perfume and then rub it into key areas of the body. It's much more conservative than liquid perfumes as you don't lose any of the product when you're applying it to your skin, and having to apply it directly really gives you an opportunity to massage it into the areas you want - a 12g tub would easily outlive a 100ml bottle in that sense.

After applying a generous lashing on each wrist, I set off to work in the hope that it would be another crowd pleaser for my colleagues. Unfortunately, I was really disappointed to find that the smell had all but vanished by the time I reached work, despite it only being a 40 minute journey. I reapplied a second helping and found that this one lasted longer - but it still only stretched a little over two hours, which is nowhere near as impressive as most of Lush's other perfumes.

Ultimately, this is not one that I would buy regularly if it was available in the shops. As the liquid perfume was so incredible, this one pales considerably next to it. I will use this to sniff and play with throughout the day, perhaps topping up if I'm craving the scent. However, it's longevity and slight oily aroma does not make it one I will be using very often.
