On this date in 1963, Kenya became independent of Great Britain.
The Swahili word for “republic” is jamhuri, hence this holiday's name.
A quickie look at Kenya's colonization would show that Britain grabbed control of the African nation in the 1800s, and Kenya officially became a colony in 1920. Kenyans demanded a greater role in their own government, but it took until 1944 for ONE African to be included in the colony's legislature. Still, the people clamored for self-rule. Finally, in the 1950s, Kenyans rebelled in what is called the Mau Mau uprisings. The Brits began to make concessions from then on, culminating in actual independence in1963.
