This article was the first to discover the significant role of aquatic organisms (the aquatic biota) in improving water quality in aquatic (freshwater and marine) ecosystem. The article was pioneering in discovering at least two important aspects of the role of the biota: (1) the central position of the biota as the most important component of the ecological processes of water self-purification; (2) the lability and vulnerability of the function of the biota in doing the water purification.
The article was downloaded in a number of top universities which have Nobel Prize winners among their alumni and faculty.

article: Biological filters are an important part of the biosphere // Science in Russia. 2009. No. 2, p. 30-36.
This paper reviews the multi-year research of aquatic organisms: the organisms which are filter-feeders. The research was done by Dr. Sergei A. Ostroumov in U.K., Russia, Ukraine, Moldova. New facts on the substancial role of the filter-feeders in improving water quality. New aspects of environmental hazards from chemical pollution, especially by surfactants and detergents.
