DESCRIPTION OF THE RESEARCH RESULTS
The results allow to better see the reality of hazards, and to find new ways to solve the problem of pollution.
The results are organized as a text with 3 sections (A, B, C): (A) new methods and facts; (B) new concepts; (C) toward eco-technologies;

A. Creation of new methods and obtaining new data helpful to environment and biodiversity protection: 1. NEW METHODS to BIOASSAY CHEMICALS on: bacteria; cyanobacteria; flagellates; algae; higher plants; invertebrates. 2. NEW METHODS that discovered HOW POLLUTANTS DECREASE THE REMOVAL BY ORGANISMS OF SUSPENDED MATTER FROM WATER. 3. NEW ALTERNATIVE NON-ANIMAL METHODS, TO EVALUATE TOXICITY OF CHEMICALS. New variants of the bioassay with plant seedlings: new species of plants (Fagopyrum esculentum et al.) were used; new index was invented to measure bioeffects of chemicals; juxtaposition of various test-systems; innovative statistical analysis; new method on the basis a discovery of new effects of surfactants on root hairs. 4. NEW toxic BIOEFFECTS OF WATER SOLUBLE CHEMICALS AND NANOMATERIALS ON microorganisms, plants, animals, and cell cultures (e.g., HeLa). Discovery of many new toxic effects of detergents, pesticides, metals, oil hydrocarbons, nanoparticles (Au, Cu, Ti). 5. NEW ECO-HAZARDS OF THE PREVIOUSLY UNDER-ESTIMATED CLASS OF CHEMICALS: SURFACTANTS AND DETERGENTS. In 1985 – 2013, the author discovered a broad range of negative bio-effects of synthetic surfactants on microorganisms, plants, and animals, summarized in his book Biological Effects of Surfactants. 6. NEW HAZARDS TO AQUACULTURE. Surfactants and detergents were found to affect the mussels M.edulis and oysters C.gigas.

B. New concepts toward better protecting environment: 1. NEW CRITERIA TO IDENTIFY ECO-HAZARDS TO AQUATIC ORGANISMS. The traditional criteria that are applied became a dogma. I demonstrated why this leads to mistakes, suggested new additional criteria towards a better identification of the eco-hazards. 2. NEW THEORY TO BETTER IDENTIFY AND PROTECT AQUATIC BIODIVERSITY WHICH IMPROVES WATER SAFETY. The new theory helped to better see new roles of almost all aquatic biodiversity in water self-purification. This provided new arguments in support of biodiversity protection. 3. NEW SYSTEM TO ORGANIZE FACTS AND IDEAS ON BIODIVERSITY PROTECTION, NATURE CONSERVATION. This was done in the book (Yablokov, Ostroumov, 1991), translated into Spanish, Czech, Bulgarian, Russian, and in part into Romanian. 4. MODERNIZATION OF THE CONCEPT OF ECOSYSTEM. The author identified shortcomings of the current definitions of ecosystem, proposed a modernized definition. This is helpful to environmental education, and to environmental law.

C. Toward steps, ecotechnologies to protect environment: 1. NEW GREEN TECHNOLOGY FOR WATER TREATMENT (PHYTOREMEDIATION). New facts on aquatic plants as tools in water decontamination were found. 2. NEW IDEAS, SUGGESTIONS WERE PUBLISHED ON PROTECTING AQUATIC BIOTA (FILTER-FEEDERS) AS A FACTOR TO PROTECT WATER QUALITY. 3. TO ALLEVIATE EUTROPHICATION: The author got new facts, proposed a 2-component approach which includes steps to decrease water pollution by chemicals that are of hazard to the natural control of phytoplankton by other aquatic organisms (filter-feeders).

THE RESEARCH RESULTS MEET THE CRITERIA:
originality: the reviewers of many publications considered it original;
• potential radical innovations: new set of criteria to identify environmental hazards to water ecosystems, to identify chemicals that are of hazard to environment; discovery of new serious hazards from synthetic surfactants; biomachinery of water purification;
development potential: new practical priorities in mitigating water pollution, in improving safety of sources (surface ecosystems) for  water supply;
technological feasibility: it is feasible: protection of functions of the existing water ecosystems, simple application of aquatic organisms (plants, invertebrates) for innovative water treatment, green technologies to improve water quality on the basis of existing ecological processes;
•  applicability field of the innovation: improving water quality; new reasons to protect aquatic biodiversity; aquaculture;
• suitability of technological and economic aspects: to improve water safety, water sustainability, economically-justified protection of ecosystems and biodiversity;
