EDITORIAL -- The state violence has struck again, let's not do it!
25 and 26 October took place in the Tarn a rally against the Sivens water storage dam.
Between 5000 and 7000 people were at the rendezvous, despite repression rampant for months
now against the ZAD of Testet (see previous issues of particular CA). Its occupant-es
were, you know, plenty molested, arrested, gassed and destroyed their habitats; the
wetland was devastated (cut trees, leveled ground). Industrial agriculture, privatized by
large destructive financial groups of small farmers and ecological balance, imposes its
law on the protection of the police and with the blessing of the state.
The conclusion of the report submitted by the expert mission had decided on 8 September,
the Environment Minister Segolene Royal on the dam project Sivens constitutes new
evidence. The results of this expertise is overwhelming ( "needs assessment based on old
data" , "overestimate the needs of substitution of about 35%" ; "content of the impact
assessment (...) very average" ; "compatibility problem between the project (...) and the
rules on state aid" ) - but nevertheless the mission considers that, given the progress of
the work, it is no longer possible to stop the project: it must continue, even if the dam
affect other uses and according to another management!
Saturday 25, late afternoon and into the night, clashes took place between dozens of
opposing es Testet to the project and the police. Rubber bullets, stun grenades and tear
gas d?sencerclement and were output once more. During the night, a protester, R?mi
Fraisse, has died. He collapsed as a result of fire grenade, and the gendarmes are
immediately came for his body to be removed.
Since then, the province has provided no explanation for his death, under the pretext that
it is awaiting the outcome autopsy ... whose publication ceases to be rejected, because
there probably discover that some police grenade is the cause. Aware of the problem that
will ask his death, the government has first that stigmatize the "violence" of the
protesters, hiding the course of its troops dispatched to the scene; Holland then took out
the violins to deplore "the drama that in any circumstances the death of a young man."
Such lures can not convince anyone why the police did they rushed to pick up the body of
R?mi, if they knew the scoring? Why this silence on the government because of his
"mysterious" death then - and extensive media blurring the press avoid dwelling on the
circumstances in which it occurred, and the only information given to date is that it
follows an "explosion"? Traces of blood discovered where R?mi have fallen in any case
excluded a priori assumption of a heart attack.
Everywhere in France, from Sunday 26, thousands of people attended rallies in support of
the ZAD Testet, in memory of Remi, and in solidarity with all victims of police violence
here and elsewhere. In these occasions, it has been noted that (except in the Tarn, Albi
Gaillac Sunday and Monday, when it was gassed again) the cops had done very discrete - as
if they were instructed to do not overdo it ...
Representative democracy, it is led by a government of the right or left, never shrink
from the use of violence when it fails to maintain order by consensus, particularly in the
consumer; and for decades, it gave his troops to suppress all means, with dozens of
security laws. The number of injured es seriously wounded by gunfire flash-ball or grenade
has been increasing in recent years. In the only event on February 22 in Nantes, against
airport Notre-Dame-des-Landes, three persons referred to in the head by rubber bullets
have lost an eye.
There is a safe bet that, in terms of party politics, the "socialist" government will have
some communication problems with the "left of the left" and environmentalists in the days
to come. Already because the Left Front, the Movement for the Sixth Republic and the
Confederation Paysanne support-es between the Testet: M?lenchon Bove and there came the
25. And a few days before they were the MPs environmentalists Duflot and Mamere ... Also,
figures such as Bove argued Mamere or three members of the Collective to safeguard the
wetland Testet who were on hunger strike since fifty days to obtain either quickly
released the report requested by the Royal experts. Finally, parents Remi complaining of
murder against person holding public authority, the Greens should support them because the
father Remi is one of their elected representatives (at Plaisance-du-Touch, in Upper Garonne).
But it is especially in the street must be a big problem for the government because it is
still on the ground, creating a balance of power, which can roll back some powers that be
- the struggle to Notre-Dame-des-Landes, among others, has shown. It is by developing the
strength and solidarity in the face of repression, but also against all logic control and
profit. Then everywhere, strength and solidarity!
