The good news: Uganda became independent of the United Kingdom on this date in 1962.
The bad news: It has been struggling for years against an extremist “Christian” group called the Lord's Resistance Army—a not-very-Christian army that has caused untold misery for thousands, even millions!
The bad news: Uganda is landlocked, which means that it has no direct access to an ocean or sea.The good news: It is in Africa's “Great Lakes” section, bordering on several large lakes, including the huge Lake Victoria (which is the largest tropical lake in the world and second only to Lake Superior among all freshwater lakes in the world).
The good news: Since 1992, the massive 56% poverty rate has dropped quite a bit.
The bad news: With almost 38% of the people living on less than $1.25 a day, Uganda is still one of the poorest nations in the world.
The good news: There are a lot of interesting and diverse cultures, languages, and customs in Uganda.The bad news: There are waaaaayyy too many problems with civil-rights violations and problems.
