Call-out for NoBorders Morocco: practical support for migrants' safety
at sea! A lot of people try to cross from Northern Morocco into Spain, many of
them via the dangerous Strait of Gibraltar. The European Union and their
helper states (such as Morocco) are trying their best to control
migration. Their racist policies are forcing people to embark on
dangerous journeys and are killing thousands of people every year in the
Mediterranean. NoBorders Morocco supports people in reclaiming one of
the most basic rights: the freedom of movement. Together with other groups (such as Watch the Med), No Borders Morocco
has lately started distributing information about safety measures at
sea. We do not promote crossing, neither do we dissuade people from
trying. We aim at increasing people's safety on their journey. Apart
from information, travellers need items such as compasses, reflectors,
satellite phones, waterproof equipment, and much more. This is why we
are calling for some material support: if people can
tat/organise/obtain/buy some of the following items, that'd be of great
help: - high visibility vests and reflectors (e.g. bike reflectors)
- whistles
- emergency and warning signals (e.g. orange/red lights, torches)
- compasses
- plastic sheets
- spare phones (especially smart phones because they have got a GPS
indicator)
- waterproof clothes Some people will leave the UK around the 20th of October, and could
take some items down to Morocco. Please get in touch with safetyatsea@riseup.net and we will coordinate where we can pick things up! Alternatively, we are happy about any sum of money we can use for buying
these things.
