Opponents of Houston equal rights ordinance fail to qualify for ballot

HOUSTON -- Opponents of Houston's LGBT-inclusive Equal Rights Ordinance (HERO) fell short of qualifying for a ballot referendum, Mayor Annise Parker announced Monday afternoon. The petition needed at least 17,269 valid signatures from registered Houston voters to put a repeal of the ordinance before voters in November.

Plaintiffs in Wis. marriage appeal: ‘Ban serves no rational government purpose’

MADISON, Wis. — Plaintiffs for eight same-sex couples who challenged Wisconsin’s gay marriage ban are telling a federal appeals court that the ban denies same-sex couples legal protections and serves no rational government purpose. The American Civil Liberties Union made the arguments in a brief filed with the 7th Circuit Court of Appeals on Monday.

Broward County judge delivers third win for marriage equality in Florida

A state circuit judge in Broward County has become the third Florida judge to rule that the state's ban on same-sex marriage is unconstitutional. Circuit Court Judge Dale Cohen issued the ruling Monday, which applies to recognition of out-of-state same-sex marriages, as well as overturning Florida's ban on same-sex marriage, in Broward County only.
