Addressing a critical need in Guinea Bissau-Vocational Education:
West African Vocational Schools is part of a movement. It's a group of people who have come together around a common mission: to transform one of the smallest and poorest countries in the world. We do this by spreading the word about the challenges that face our friends in Africa and by helping support a vocational school that is training the country's future leaders.
Since it was founded in 2000, WAVS has been working in the town of Canchungo in western Guinea-Bissau. In 2007, it helped establish a post-secondary school. Today, the school is run by a Guinean executive director and has more than 100 students and offers courses in computer basics, auto mechanics, sewing and English – courses that are in demand by people in the community and are designed to help students acquire marketable job skills.
WAVS is a Christian organization that works with indigenous leaders to strengthen and expand local churches and the faith community in Guinea-Bissau. The vocational school in Canchungo openly promotes the good news of the Gospel by welcoming students from all backgrounds and faiths.
