He hosted "Morning Music," a now-defunct classical show on WNYC from 1982 until 2001. He returned to WNYC in 2002 to host "The No Show," a quirky combination of music and commentary that defied almost every programming rule of radio.
His interest in radio started before he was a teenager, he said in his official WNYC biography. He would record pretend radio shows on his father's tape recorder, creating personalities such as Paige Turner.
He started his full-time radio career in the 1960s at WBAI, the Pacifica station noted for its assortment of mostly progressive hosts who often valued passion over traditional radio presentation.
