Greece : Up Date: Mytilini 25.8.‏2014

the weather is good and everyday new refugees arive. in the most remote
areas of the island.
the coastguard , needs hours to transport them to PIKPA.
they usually come exausted, thursty, hungry and many with swallen feet
from the long walk.

Moria detention is ovecrowded with around 140 persons. so families and
women are free sometimes even on the same day.
freed people tell that sometimes 3 people have to sleep on one bed. that
the toilets stink and the black water runs over in the sleeping rooms.
(same happend just after the begining of Moria :

In PIKPA the numbers change daily, yeasterday 78 new arived people where
there.
Then the police brought also another 12 people freed from Moria who
could not travel to Athens because it is the main holiday time in Grecce
and the boats are overbooked.
New arived people informed us that the coastguard tells them when we are
not present, that they are not allowed to get out of PIKPA otherwise
they would bring them back to Turkey!

Since no medical care is provided by the greek authorities at all to the
newcomers, untill the get to prison in Moria where the Doctors of the
world check them, we are obliged to find out how serious the health
problems of the people are and to inform the coastguard that usually
doesnt take the time to transport them to hospital.
Since the island has very few ambulances we are not suposed to call the
ambulance and only the doctors of the world should do it but only in
cases of life and death .

Since the failures of construction in Moria are now known and visible,
even the authorities admit that they can not "open" the preremoval
prison and the so called "first reception" untill begining 2015.

So probably the situation of the coastguard using PIKPA further on will
go on but on the same time the newly voted
Major who will take over in September and belongs to the very
conservative party Anexartiti Ellines, is no garantie at all for " the
village of all together" to keep PIKPA.

but as we all know: majors ,coastguard directors, police chiefs, come
and go, but we stay!
newcomers have to be welcomed and not inprison so we continue with our
welcoming and informing culture.
and now in mitlini this works perfectly specially with our newly published
