This year, I noticed May 10 fell on a Saturday. As you all know, the golden spike ceremony linking the Union Pacific and Central Pacific railroads occurred on May 10, 1869. Realizing this year was the 145th anniversary of that momentous event, Katy and I headed to Golden Spike National Historic Site in Promontory. The events that day were well-attended. We arrived at 10:30 am, which was too late to take part in the "champagne photo" recreation. However, the two locomotives were parked just west of the last spike site for visitors to inspect. Here is a photo of that event.
