Well-cited excellent article, fresh deep insight into aquatic ecology: both freshwater and marine ecology. The paper is unique in providing a better understanding of several hot issues in studying aquatic ecosystem function. Among the important issues analyzed in this excellent innovative paper, relevant facts and ideas on the role of filter-feeders (invertebrated that filter water) in ecosystems are presented and discussed. The author, a Fulbright award winning researcher, conducted interesting experiments with invertebrate animals who are filter-feeders (suspension feeders). The author discovered new facts on chemical pollutants exemplified by synthetic surfactants and detergents. His experiments demonstrated that these chemical polutants inhibit (slow down) the rate of water filtration by these organisms.
The paper presented new data on the inhibitory effects of surfactants and detergents on benthic filter-feeders (the Latin names of these species of water bivalve mollusks: Unio tumidus , U. pictorum , Mytilus galloprovincialis , M. edulis and Crassostrea gigas).
These facts help understand many phenomena. E.g., these facts help understand problems of eutrophication, and algal blooms (and cyanobacterial blooms). Moreover, these facts help to better understand ecosystem function, namely, the ecosystem function in improving water quality. This paper is really very useful and it is not surprizing that it is cited well.
I recommend this paper as very useful, interesting, innovative. This article is of big interest to all colleagues and students who are studying ecology, aquatic biology, environmental toxicology, ecotoxicology, water quality, limnology and biological oceanography.
