Space Day is an international day for education about space—astronomy, aeronautics, cosmology, and astrophysics!

It's supposed to be the first Friday of May – today! – but some museums are having special Space Day programs on other days. For example, the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force near Dayton, Ohio, will be celebrating on May 16, 2014.

This holiday was created in 1997 by the Lockheed Martin Corporation in an attempt to get kids interested in science and math. 

In 2001 former astronaut Senator John Glenn expanded the day from National to International Space Day.

Here are some ways to celebrate Space Day:

  • Buy a “Space Kit” from little Bits in collaboration with NASA. You can create a satellite dish, a Mars rover, and many other electronic items.


















  • Check out astronaut Chris Hadfield's videos, most filmed on the International Space Station.
