Biodetritus that formed over a 7-month period in microcosms with Viviparus viviparus, Unio pictorum, and Ceratophyllum demersum contained a number of elements. This is the first study to determine concentrations of some elements in biodetritus. Neutron activation analysis showed that the elements’ concentrations decrease in the following order: Ca > Zn > Ba > Br > Ce > Se > Nd > La > U > Hf > Sb > Th > Sm > S > Cs > Au.

The experimental data analysis, concepts, and generalizations in this article provide the fundamental elements of the qualitative theory of biocontrol (biological formation) of water quality in a systematized form. The theory covers water self-purification in freshwater and marine ecosystems. The theory is supported by the results of the author’s experimental studies of the effects exerted by some chemical pollutants including synthetic ...

The paper formulates the fundamentals of the modern ecological theory of the multifunctional (polyfunctional) role of biota in the molecular-ecological mechanism of water quality formation and self-purification of aquatic ecosystems. The theory covers the following items: (1) sources of energy for self-purification mechanisms, (2) the main structural and functional units of the self-purification system, (3) the main processes involved in the system, (4) contributions of major taxa to self-purification, (5) system reliability and supporting mechanisms, (6) the response of the system as a whole to external factors, (7) details of the operation of water purification mechanisms, and (8) conclusions and recommendations for biodiversity preservation practice.

The effects of the anionic surfactant sodium dodecyl sulphate (sulfate) on the aquatic macrophyte Potamogeton crispus L. are studied. Concentrations of 83–133 mg/l caused fragmentation of the stems of plants. The tolerance of the plants to the negative effects of the surfactant was higher in the spring (April) than in the autumn (September).

The experience was carried out under laboratory conditions, by using natural seawater collected from the sponge environment. The study demonstrates a high efficiency of the sponge in ...

V.I. Vernadsky pointed out that “the living matter in the biosphere plays a fundamental and active role, and in exercising its power it is in no way comparable with anything else, with any other geological factor.” [1]. Finding concrete evidence that support this statement still remains an important aspect in the study of ecosystems, including aquatic systems. To ...

Suspension-feeders are discriminate feeders, selecting prey by size, shape and food quality, this discriminate feeding behaviour has important consequences for the modelling of growth rates, population dynamics and ecosystem change. All aspects of regulatory interactions between organisms are of significant importance for ecosystem structure and functions. Certain aspects of regulatory interactions were considered in the preceding works [1, 2]. Regulatory interactions in trophic chains, including the regulation of lower links by higher links (the top down control), are of cardinal importance [3, 4]. The ecosystem regulation disturbances caused by anthropogenic ...

Many natural and synthetic compounds are used in studying the relationships between semiautonomous cellular organelles and nueleocytoplasm. These studies, together with analyses of the organelle macromolecules by methods of molecular biology, constitute a firm basis for adoption of the endosymbiotic origin of plastids and mitochondria.
