The interaction of copper with aquatic organisms (the main focus was on molluscs) is analysed in context of ecological monitoring and the role of aquatic organisms in biogeochemical fluxes. The paper presents data on copper accumulation in molluscs (mainly bivalves) including those on copper concentrations in the soft tissues and shells of freshwater and marine molluscs. Among the organisms mentioned in the paper, there are Mytilus galloprovincialis, M. edulis, Crenomytilus grayanus, Dreissena polymorpha, Unio sp., Anodonta cygnea, Bithynia tentaculata, Theodoxus fluviatilis, Lymnaea ovata, some other mollusks and aquatic organisms. Some new author’s data on the concentration of copper in Unio pictorum, and Mytilus galloprovincialis are included in the paper. The data on the interactions between copper and aquatic organisms are relevant to the ecological monitoring and quantitative estimates of the role of aquatic organisms in the biogeochemical flows of that element.
