(en) France, Alternative Libertaire AL #234 - Environmental movements: What mobilizations to save the planet? (fr, pt)

The impasse of ecology compatible with capitalism promotes the development of radical
environmental movement, anti-capitalist and self-management. ---- It is now nearly fifty
years of current political ecology, drawing on the work of biologists and climatologists,
we warn of the risks that is wearing the capitalist system, like any production-system on
the planet and therefore on the living conditions of humanity. But these speeches were
eclipsed by the invention of "sustainable development" in the 1980s, intended to reconcile
capitalist growth and taking into account environmental constraints. Vain illusion, which
has unfortunately seduced a large part of the green movement which is then precipitated in
the logic of the system: elections, NGOs funded by states or companies, lobbying, etc..
But twenty years of efforts to change the system from within have come to nothing, and the
ecological disaster continues.

Dynamic movements ecologists

Faced with this situation, practices, discourses and environmentalists struggles multiply
and radicalized in recent years, away from the naive government collaboration green
parties. Climate many camps have been organized since the Drax in 2006 in England, against
the summits are held in the margins of international meetings on the environment (up to
100 000 people in Copenhagen in 2009), struggles against major projects unnecessary and
taxed (GPII) organize and express solidarity and grassroots initiatives bloom:
self-directed repair (appliances, bicycles, cars), moves back to the earth, looking for
short circuits, transition initiatives, etc.. These struggles and movements are very
diverse, but generally share a few characteristics: horizontal organization, refusal
logical partisan criticism of syndicalism productivist opposing employment and ecology
(the capitalists), direct action. It's getting close first values rather libertarian,
developed by Murray Bookchin Andr? Gorz or in the 1960s and 1970s.

This dynamism ecologists movements, which contrasts with a certain weakness of social
movements (pensions, ANI), but still suffers from a break and mistrust between trends can
be very individualistic and more organized political movements. But attempts to
convergence of struggles around the GPII for example, or the closing statement of the
Village alternatives Bayonne 6 October calling for multiplication of these events, or the
beginning of a work unit between AL, the alternative, the NPA and the Moc (movement of
growth objectors) on environmental issues, do hope the progressive strengthening of an
anti-capitalist environmental values. This building will be essential to prepare the UN
summit on climate Paris in December 2015 and be heard louder than ever on this occasion
the slogan "System change, not climate change."
