The role of this book in science is explained in this article which was published in 2013 in the journal titled: Akademos, the full title of this journal is: Akademos. Journal of Science, Innovation, Culture and Art: a reviewed journal of Public Access. ISSN 1857-0461;
This is an abstract of the recent article that describes the role of the book (Ostroumov S.A. 'Introduction to Biochemical Ecology' [ Vvedenie v biohimičeskuju èkologiju ], 1986; Moscow University Press; Moscow, Russian Federation):

Abstract/ Summary.
[The text is a result of a computer translation, with imperfections]:
This review paper analyzed the genesis and the evolution of the notion of chemical factors in the environment. The scientific study of these factors has been initiated by: A.-L. Lavoisier, Louis Pasteur, J.B. Lamarck, Justus von Liebig, continuing with Victor Shelford, W. P. Taylor, E. Rubel, W. Tischler, P. Williams, B. Harborne, M. Barbier, Sergei A. Ostroumov, M. M. Telitcenko, K. M. Hailov, et al. As a result, these scientists created two areas of science, namely, Biochemical Ecology and Environmental Chemistry. The science of biochemical ecology started in Moscow in 1986 with the book 'Introduction to Biochemical Ecology' (Ostroumov, Vvedenie v biohimičeskuju èkologiju 1986; Moscow University Press; Polish edition: Wprowadzenie do ekologii biochemicznej, 1992).
A note on the author of the paper in Akademos: Prof. Dr. I. Dediu was a Minister of Environment in the Government of Republic of Moldova; authored a number of monograph on the biosphere and fundamental issues of ecology].
As an addition to this abstract, it is necessary to mention some innovations in concepts and terminology of ecology which were presented in this book. Dr. Sergei Ostroumov proposed new concepts and terms: ecological chemoregulators and ecological chemomediators. These terms include natural chemicals that are produced by organisms and have some important effects on other organisms. Examples are pheromones, toxins and many other chemicals, especially secondary metabolites and some other substances. The concepts of the author were published also in the paper which is available online, in English: This paper is a continuation of the book:
On the concepts of biochemical ecology and hydrobiology: Ecological chemomediators.
S. A. Ostroumov. Contemporary Problems of Ecology, 2008; 1: 238-244. DOI:10.1134/S1995425508020100 ;
The innovations in this book help to see new aspects of natural mechanisms in the biosphere which support stability of ecosystems and the environment.
The book was translated into Polish and Bulgarian languages. The picture of the cover of the Polish edition.
The book is being used as a textbook in university education, it is on lists of the recommended literature at many universities, e.g., at many Polish universities: A better understanding of these mechanisms is very important to environmental protection.
The conclusion and bottom line of the review of this book: it is an excellent scientific book of a large importance to development of science of ecology, environmental and biological sciences.
