A new reason for and factor contributing to the symptom of eutrophication, excessive abundance of phytoplankton, was discovered in this paper.
This factor was discovered to be a decrease in activity of filter-feeders in the aquatic ecosystem. The author discovered that it is surfactants and detergent that decrease the filtering activity of filter-feeders exemplified by bivalve mollusks.
Thus in the paper, a new link was discovered between chemical pollution with ecotoxicants (exemplified by surfactants and detergents) and eutrophiucation.
A new solution was suggested to solve the problem of eutrophication. This solution is a decrease in chemical pollution of water with detergents which have surfactants as part of their chemical composition.
As a result of his new experiments, the author discovered an additional and important factor that contributes to eutrophication. This factor is connected with neither P, nor N. This factor is surfactants which inhibit filter-feeders. As a result, a new methodology and measures to prevent and control eutrophication are proposed. Application: to ensure water sustainability , and water quality.
