Melissa Sepulveda "One of the most important challenges is to present us as a real
alternative" ---- Melissa Sepulveda, a medical student of 22 years, militant Libertarian
Students Front s (FEL) and libertarian feminist " La Alzada "foio elected in mid-November,
President of the Federation of Students of the University of Chile (Zip) as candidate of
"Fighting" list, with 31.2% of the votes. This list is the expression of an "area of
political and social construction beginning in late 2011 in order to converge different
existing projects based at the University of Chile developed by independent organizations
and the Revolutionary Left Intent pointing to the development a project of University
education and to foster the social set, "according to the program explains itself. The FEL
was an animator and a major force within this broad coalition that articulates not only at
the time of student elections, but that works in areas of construction and mobilization of
permanently developing uima proposed university within a project of radical social
transformation the current Chile.
We talked with Melissa to explain to us the bet as spokesman Zip will the current period.
Clear and concise, d?.nos a summary of the challenges that the popular movement, the
student movement and libertarian movement have at times when, before the crisis of the
model, the group in power feels the need to reform to win on governance. At the end of the
interview there is a link to the program that "Fight" won the presidency of the Federation.
1.The media put emphasis on the fact that you be the first president of the anarchist
Closing in 91 years. How do you see this challenge to the libertarian movement, in
particular for the FEL, even more so when it takes not only the maximum charge of
representing the most important student federation, but also one of the most important
social movements of the country?
One of the most important challenges at the moment is power mostrarmo us as a real
alternative, beyond which is the marginal revolutionary left ... there has not been
anything but a left to the left of the Communist Party. It is an important challenge for
the FEL because through the federation, which is one of the most important voices of the
national social movements, we can translate the political commitment for this period in a
language understandable to the population. We also aim to destigmatize the anarchist and
libertarian who the media constantly to reflect public opinion.
2. How do you see the relationship between the student movement and other social movements?
Well, this is the first bet we have to "fight". What is sought is to give back to the Zip
drive to get linkage with other social sectors. We have stated that education is not just
a problem for students, but that is a problem of inequality in Chile, and this unequal
distribution of wealth is reflected in the educational model, the model of health in labor
reality. Are different faces of the same problem, so we try to drive the sectors that have
mobilized against this model, mainly with the trade union sector, trying to articulate a
multisectoral block.
3. One of the slogans of the anarcho-communist movement in the period of reorganization,
which was also assumed by the FEL, is that the unity of the people must be forged from
below and the fight ... How do interpret this slogan?
How a bet by multisectorialidade. Been clear that alliances between leaders of the
students with the CUT (Central Chilean Trade Union) or the Port Union are not enough
workers basic, basic students, are part of the same historical project and should be built
a supportive, cooperative unit, between employees and students base.
4. There is a secret to dwindle that lives an escalation of popular struggles in Chile and
that different sectors developed different proposals to address the situation, some speak
of a constituent assembly, others democratic rupture, etc.. You speak to translate this
political commitment period for language accessible to the common people, so it becomes a
real alternative. What is this alternative?
What is more clear is that the current period is marked by irreformabilidade Chilean
neoliberal model and instability that are generating or that may generate social
movements. Bachelet (President of Chile) attempt to provide governance to the country.
Have to make reforms, know that institutional closure that has existed in Chile since the
dictatorship must end. If these reforms put social movements a new standard for the class
struggle in Chile, it depends on the social movements, Bachelet is not that assign free
but must be a victory of the people. There are certain key points of no return for this
new stage of struggle that we must be able to determine ... there are some that have been
placed by social movements since 2005 forward, as the welfare system, a labor code that
allows collective bargaining, the reform Tribute + aria, education, wealth redistribution
through education reforms, tax reforms, the same capacity for collective bargaining ... We
know if we need a new constitution, but there very well argue that the proposal of the
Constituent Assembly, because there we see whether it is favorable or not to the popular
movement. Bachelet has popular legitimacy, it is said by all the polls and so is actually,
but there is still much fear because of dictatorship, fear radical and profound changes
... must be critically appreciate all proposals, because everyone is in agreement that the
model needs to change.
