The present study is in the effect of chondroitinase, and enzyme that can break down scar tissue when injected into the spinal cord of a paralyzed dog.
Scar tissue can become a problem when it replaces functional tissue. It forms when the body is unable to reproduce healthy tissue after trauma. While scar tissue serves an important role, it can also get in a way of healing and function.

In spinal cord repair, scar tissue is a major obstacle because it creates physical and biochemical blockage of the neurons.
Inhibiting the scar tissue could then promote better healing and recovery.
