Neurotoxins, as one would figure, are generally a bad thing. But so is pain. Particularly severe, chronic pain. Scientists are learning to harness properties of neurotoxins.
According to new study, a neurotoxin injection to dogs with bone cancer resulted in a significantly greater pain relief than they could get with standard care.
The substance used (SP-sap) is used to decrease pain. Without going into much detail, the neurotoxin administration results in death of the pain-sensing nerves.
Sounds rather drastic, but pain from bone cancer is excrutiating.
According to the study, the pain relieve from this treatment was significant.
Would I resort to such treatment for my dog? If it was to increase the length and quality of their life, I'd certainly consider it.
