Nik Kafka founder of Teach a Man to Fish in 360º, The Business Transformation Journal:
The education system in many countries is a historical legacy which often fails to provide young people with the skills, knowledge, and experience they need to realize their potential. The “Education That Pays For Itself” model from the Teach A Man To Fish organization represents a business trans-formation mindset applied to this challenge. By centering learning around school businesses, education is transformed to prepare students to succeed in life, rather than in exams. Teach A Man To Fish promotes school-based enterprises that serve both as learning platforms and as an additional source of income for the school. Students work on the businesses alongside their academic education and gain valuable technical and entrepreneurial skills while the profits from these enterprises help pay the school’s running costs in a sustainable way. This allows students from low-income families to have access to free or low-cost education which is relevant to employment and enables them to shake off poverty. This article illustrates the initiative with various examples like La Bastilla Technical High School in Jinotega, Nicaragua.More here
