¨With four active volcanoes, a major faultline and shores on both the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean, Guatemala is constantly at risk of major disaster. Additionally, the country’s 36-year civil war stalled development and caused many people to emigrate in search of safety and economic opportunity.
Since 2005, Episcopal Relief & Development has been working with the Episcopal Diocese of Guatemala to formulate a comprehensive approach to development issues, including the establishment of a Diocesan Development Office in 2007.
To address chronic poverty in rural communities, we worked with the Church to identify and train key regional leaders who could facilitate the formation of community-based savings and micro-finance groups. Our partner provides business training and skills workshops to promote economic growth and development, and a revolving fund has been established to support small business development and job creation.
The Church also implements a youth-led tree planting and harvesting initiative in four of the communities that participate in the micro-finance program.¨
