UN-Water is not an organization or an agency. It is the United Nations coordination mechanism for all water-related issues. UN-Water activities and programmes are therefore implemented by its members, with the support of its partners.
World Water Day
International World Water Day is held annually on 22 March as a means of focusing attention on the importance of freshwater and advocating for the sustainable management of freshwater resources. An international day to celebrate freshwater was recommended at the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED). The United Nations General Assembly responded by designating 22 March 1993 as the first World Water Day. Each year, World Water Day highlights a specific aspect of freshwater and is coordinated by a member on behalf of UN-Water.Read more on the World Water Day arrow

"Water for Life" UN-Water Best Practices Award
Award LogoThe "Water for Life" UN-Water Best Practices Award recognizes outstanding practices that can ensure the long-term sustainable management of water resources and contribute to the achievement of internationally agreed goals and targets. The prize is awarded yearly in two categories, one in best water management practices and another one in best participatory, communication, awareness-raising and education practices.

The award is bestowed by the United Nations Office to Support the International Decade for Action "Water for Life" 2005-2015 and the UN World Water Assessment Programme (WWAP). The purpose of the Award is to promote efforts to fulfill international commitments made on water and water-related issues by 2015 through recognition of outstanding best practices that can ensure the long-term sustainable management of water resources and contribute to the achievement of internationally agreed goals and targets contained in the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), Agenda 21 and the Johannesburg Plan of Implementation.

Every year, special emphasis is being put on the theme selected for next World Water Day.

Special rapporteurThe UN Special Rapporteur on the Human Rights to Water and Sanitation Ms. Catarina De Albuquerque presented on 11 September at the Human Rights Council her annual thematic report. The report, which is devoted to the topic of sustainability and the realization of the human rights to water and sanitation, examines how these rights can and must be met for present and future generations. The Special rapporteur also participated on 12 September to a side-event organised on the topic of Eliminating Inequalities and Social Exclusion through the Post-2015 Development Agenda (see below).

Water and Human Rights in the Post 2015 Agenda - Side Event Human Rights Council - 13 Sep 2013
Posted: 11 Sep 2013
The objective of the side event is to review progress in the post- 2015 debate on the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) from a human rights perspective. The event will focus specifically on a human rights approach to water governance in order to establish to what extent human rights have a role to play in water governance after 2015. This requires an explicit linkage between decision- makers in the sphere of human rights in Geneva and decision- makers within the post- 2015 agenda in New York.

UN-Water Annual ReportLike the rest of the international community, UN- Water has been working hard in 2012 to contribute to shaping a more inclusive post-2015 development framework that builds on the MDGs and addresses their weaknesses. The role of UN-Water as the coordinating mechanism across the UN System has been growing and UN-Water has in particular united the voice of UN-Water Members, Partners and stakeholders into the discussions on all issues related to freshwater, including sanitation. The 2012 Annual Report highlights key activities related to the post-2015 agenda but also the success of the World Water Day campaign, the release of flagship reports and other important thematic work.

Newly launched UN-Water Country Briefs: Interview with Project Supervisor Karen Frenken, FAO
Posted: 11 Sep 2013
Publication reviewHow much does water matter to a country's development and growth? How much is the country investing in water?
In pooling together the national data on these themes, the UN-Water Country Briefs also generated a new data set on investments in water for the 13 pilot countries. Moreover, they have elaborated a replicable method, which could be applied to other countries, focusing on the tacit links between water-related investment and development. In this interview Ms. Karen Frenken answers the questions of Ms. Marisha Wojciechowska-Shibuya on the Briefs and the way forward.

Budapest Water Summit
Budapest Water Summit
8-11 October 2013 | Budapest, Hungary
Building on Hungary's achievements during its Presidency of the EU in 2011, the Hungarian Government selected the issue of water as its top priority in the run up to and at the Rio+20 Conference on Sustainable Development in June 2012. To follow up the conclusions of the Conference Mr János Áder, the President of Hungary, announced in Rio de Janeiro Hungary's intention to organise a major international water event (Budapest World Water Summit) in October 2013. With the participation of UN Member States, competent UN agencies and bodies as well as all concerned economic and social partners the Summit aims to contribute to the elaboration of the water-related Sustainable Development Goals and provide concrete guidance on the most pressing water issues – drinking water, sanitation, waste water treatment, integrated water management, international water cooperation, innovative water technologies – with a view to defining the priorities of global development policy post 2015.
On this occasion, UN-Water organizes a Side Event on 9 October: Policy Dialogue on an Emerging Proposal for a Dedicated Global Goal on Water, Targets and Indicators.
The event will discuss UN-Water's proposal for a Global Goal on Water. The proposal is the result of an extensive consultation among UN-Water Members and Partners as well as relevant stakeholders. The final proposal will be published in early 2014.
