Giant fossilized skull from Buir Lake identified

A giant fossilized skull was found in Khalkh Gol soum in Mongolia's Dornod Province last week. The Dornod Province Governor took the 80 centimeter long skull under protection and requested that the Institute of Paleontology of Mongolian Academy of Sciences study the skull. Experts found that the skull belonged to a species of rhinoceros which dates back to 15,000 to 20,000 years ago.

Giant fossilized skull from Buir Lake identified

Victory Museum of Khalkh Gol soum will preserve and exhibit the skull and advice on how to maintain the skull was sent to province museum officials. Further paleontological excavation will take place next spring in the area where the skull was found.
