Protesters in Turkey Seriously Injured by Teargas Fire Photo © 2013 Miguel Carminati
Burak Ünveren, a protester, lost an eye when Turkey's police fired a teargas canister directly at him. Close-range teargas canister fire also fractured Hasan Kiliçgedik's skull and broke Ergin Sahin's leg.
Although teargas is normally not a lethal weapon, teargas canisters can inflict serious and even life-threatening wounds when fired directly at people, which happened over and over again in Istanbul's Gezi Park protests. Human Rights Watch independently documented 10 such cases, and local groups recorded many more.
In addition to firing teargas canisters directly at protesters, police shot huge quantities of teargas into confined spaces such as a hotel lobby, a hospital, and makeshift health clinics.
 | In Cameroon, LGBTI Rights Activist Found Dead, Tortured
Eric Ohena Lembembe was an inspiring activist whose work was deeply appreciated by human rights activists in Cameroon and around the world. Advocating for equal rights in Cameroon, where LGBTI people face severe discrimination and violence, takes tremendous courage. Eric's activism paved the way for a society based on equality and nondiscrimination.

 | Meeting Edward Snowden
When I received an email late Thursday from one "Edward Snowden" I was naturally skeptical. The invitation, supposedly from one of the world's most sought-after people, had a whiff of Cold War-era spy thriller to it. The note instructed me to go to the arrivals hall of Sheremetyevo Airport, where "someone from airport staff will be waiting there to receive you with a sign labeled 'G9.'"
