This large-scale event started yesterday.More than 1,000 exhibits.
Lots of seminars.
More than 100,000 visitors expected over the four days.
A huge info-swap for farmers and agri-businesses, interested in the latest techniques and technologies: it's the Agricultural Fieldays!
I don't quite know what to make of this, but the event includes a “Rural Bachelor of the Year” contest. Apparently, eight contestants (6 Kiwis, that is men from New Zealand, and 2 Australians) were flown to a mystery location last Monday. They had to somehow get to Fieldays—but they each had to stop in specific towns and complete various tasks. The winner takes home a $23,000 prize package!
Another feature of Fieldays is “Kiwi's Best Kitchen,” in which visitors are plied with the best of Kiwi dishes and beverages. I am not saying that all the food features kiwi fruit or (heavens, no!) roasted kiwi bird! As I'm sure you've figured out, “Kiwi” is a nickname for anything New Zealand, just as “Aussie” is a nickname for Australian people and things.
Agriculture has always been important in New Zealand—and the nation exports a large percent of its farm products to Australia, the United States and United Kingdom, Japan, China, and other nations. Wool was the major export in the past, but now dairy and wine have become more important; meat and fruit and other products are also important exports.
